“Trends 2024: European Higher Education Institutions in Times of Transition” by Michel Gaebel and Therese Zhang provides a comprehensive overview of the challenges and changes facing higher education institutions across Europe. Published by the European University Association (EUA), the report reflects on the dynamic changes of the past five years, with a focus on educational reforms, societal upheavals and technological advances.

Key themes in the report include the impact of major global events, such as the COVID-19 pandemic and Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, which have reshaped the priorities of European universities. Survey data from 480 institutions in 46 systems reveals how universities are adapting to changing student demographics, evolving educational provision and the growing demand for non-degree learning.

The authors also highlight the rise of innovation in learning and teaching and the growing importance of mobility and internationalisation as universities seek to remain relevant in an increasingly global and competitive environment.

This edition emphasises institutions’ missions beyond education, including research and community engagement, and how they are responding to societal needs in times of crisis.
