Workshop on “Cultural Awareness in Communication”
International students and researchers participated in this workshop to learn strategies for effective cross-cultural interaction. The session provided an opportunity to reflect on the role of culture in shaping communication across various contexts.
The workshop organised by EURAXESS Austria and APPEAR was concluded by a networking dinner.

Career Training Day at the OeAD
On 18 October, the OeAD welcomed 38 scholars for a Career Training Day, providing them with tools to enhance their future academic and professional careers. The OeAD presented its services in a relaxed atmosphere. In addition, tools such as EURAXESS, EUROPASS and grants.at were presented, workshops were offered and the services of the Austrian Business Agency for internationals planning to live and work in Austria were introduced.

Research Staz at the Matej Bel University in Slovakia
Marc Giménez Maranges is a young scientist from the Paris Lodron University of Salzburg who received a scholarship for his research stay at the Matej Bel University in Banská Bystrica in the framework of the Action Austria-Slovakia programme. His research focus lies on the analysis of socio-technical transformations in the management of urban stormwater and he is interested in societal changes towards sustainability. Banská Bystrica as a calm city surrounded by hills was the perfect setting for him, as he has met extremely friendly, motivated and welcoming colleagues.

Insightful Open-Access Publication on Interviewing in Crisis Situations
APPEAR scholar Sona Balasanyan from Armenia recently published an open-access study that explores how qualitative interviews can bring out deeper insights when dealing with people facing crises. Co-authored with her local supervisor, this study was developed during her fieldwork. It provided new ways to understand people’s experiences in difficult, critical life situations, such as pandemics, economic crises, conflicts, and ecological challenges. The publication of this methodological study was essential for Sona’s PhD work at the University of Vienna, Department of Education.

Pioneering Research in Animal Breeding in Burkina Faso
Dr. Dominique Ouédraogo has built a notable career in sustainable animal breeding. After completing his PhD at BOKU University as part of the APPEAR-funded LoCaBreed project, he became an Assistant Lecturer at the University Centre of Ziniaré in 2021. Just a year later, he achieved habilitation and was appointed Head of the Department of Animal Husbandry. Currently, he leads research projects like LocaBreed2.0 and PigFaso, collaborating with institutions across Africa and Europe.

Research in Burkina Faso and Mali with Marietta Blau
Elisabeth Huber spent six months in Mali and Burkina Faso with the Marietta Blau Scholarship. As part of her doctorate, she investigated the effects of urbanisation on people’s living conditions and their opportunities to act in an environmentally friendly way. She is currently employed as a research assistant at the Centre for Environmental Sensitivity at the University for Continuing Education Krems and is still connected to the OeAD through the GIRT research project, which is funded by APPEAR.

Advancing Sustainable Agroforestry Research in Ethiopia
Hafte Tesfay, who completed his PhD at BOKU in 2020 under the APPEAR programme works as a researcher at Austria’s Federal Research and Training Centre for Forests and BOKU University. At Tropentag 2024 in Vienna he presented his study on Gedeo’s agroforests in Ethiopia. He also chaired a session on ecosystems, advancing collaboration with CIFOR-ICRAF. With expertise in forest biodiversity and climate change mitigation, Tesfay leads the STRENGTH project, which empowers women in agroforestry research and education in Ethiopia’s Fogera district.
Championing Sustainability, Gender Equity, and Academic Excellence in Ethiopia
Meseret Desta, Associate Professor of Forests and Livelihoods at the University of Gondar, is a leader in sustainable land use and ecosystem services. She had served the university as president for five years. This was a major shift in terms of gender balance in university leadership, as Meseret was the first and only woman to hold a senior leadership position. Meseret collaborates with Austrian institutions, earning her PhD from BOKU and contributing to EU Erasmus+ projects. She has advanced agroforestry and sustainability, leaving a global impact on environmental management.

Workshop Report: Equitable North-South Partnerships in Higher Education
Challenges, Lessons of Experience and Ways Forward. The workshop, which took place on 7 November 2024 at the Centre for International Development, discussed the experiences of Austrian and international actors involved in North-South and South-South cooperation projects in higher education. It aimed at improving the understanding of change processes induced by such projects over time, their impact mechanisms and implications at the implementation and policy levels.

The project Sustainable Higher Education and Research in Kosovo (SHER) aims to enhance the quality of teaching, research and innovation in the Higher Education and Research sector in Kosovo and will enable PhD students and post-doc researchers to study and carry out research in Austria. The submission deadline of the first call is 15 January 2025.

University of Klagenfurt Technology Scholarships
The eighth call for applications for the technology scholarships starting from the winter term 2025/26 is open until 15 January 2025. The aim is to attract international students to the regional ICT labour market. The University of Klagenfurt offers degree programmes in technical sciences that train highly qualified specialists.

5th Call for Africa-UniNet Research Cooperation Projects
Proposals for cooperative research projects can be submitted until 28 February 2025. Africa-UniNet promotes excellent research based on mutual knowledge exchange. While the thematic scope of the cooperative research projects is not restricted, they set out to contribute to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Due to new regulations set by the BMBWF, only Austrian member institutions are eligible to submit and coordinate a project. African member institutions are eligible as project partners. All participating institutions must be active Africa-UniNet members.

5th KoEF Call for Funding
The 5th KoEF Call for funding is open until 28 February 2025. Funding is provided for cooperation projects that aim to contribute to the analysis and solution of local challenges and to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Due to new regulations set by the BMBWF, only Austrian Higher Education Institutions or Austrian Research Institutions are able to submit and coordinate a project. Partner institutions in the Global South are eligible as project partners. They must be located in an eligible country as provided in the call information.
