OeAD Country Talk Bosnia and Herzegovina, 11 April 2024
The OeAD Country Talks present countries and regions of the world that are not necessarily perceived in Austria as typical partner destinations for scientific and educational cooperation. On 11 April 2024, you will have the opportunity to learn more about the complex relations between Bosnia and Herzegovina and Austria in all areas of education, to meet interesting guests and, after the official part of the evening, to enjoy traditional Bosnian cuisine and music.

OeAD Alumni Talk with Kahsa Gebre, 25 April 2024
Kahsa Gebre holds a PhD from the BOKU University. Her doctoral research focused on dynamic systems modelling of breeding sheep populations in Ethiopia. She is an Associate Professor at Mekelle University. Currently, Kahsa is back at BOKU working on a project to improve the productivity of indigenous livestock in developing countries. Join us on 25 April at the OeAD, where she will talk about her research interests and experiences as a former scholar.

Hoai Tran | From fields to labs: The bioactive tapestry of seedy bananas
Hoai Tran holds a Master’s degree in Food Technology from the Vietnam National University of Agriculture. Currently she is pursuing a Ph.D. at BOKU University, financed by the ASEA-UNINET scholarship.
Her project focuses on the purification and determination of bioactive compounds in seedy bananas. Hoai Tran’s journey as biochemist is not only an exploration of scientific fields but also a commitment to make a positive impact on the communities that rely on seedy bananas in Vietnam.
Podcast: Research cooperation between Armenia and Austria
Armenia has undergone a long process of transition from the Soviet system to a market economy. However, its people still face a wide range of social, economic and environmental problems. Universities have an important role to play in finding solutions.
In this podcast, former APPEAR scholar Tigran Keryan talks about his efforts to promote collaborative knowledge production and the importance of international cooperation, such as APPEAR’s EcoServ project EcoServ.

Amina Tucak-Smajić | S&T Cooperation and CEEPUS
Pharmacist Amina Tucak-Smajić from Bosnia and Herzegovina is currently completing her PhD studies at the University of Sarajevo and is researching innovative approaches for more effective drug delivery systems to combat obesity. The successful OeAD alumna has so far been in Austria between 2019 and 2023 with CEEPUS and S&T Cooperation to conduct research at the University of Graz. The stays resulted in a scientific article in the renowned journal “Pharmaceuticals”, which was presented at several symposia and congresses.

Empowering lives in Burkina Faso through genetic improvement of animal breeding
After completing his PhD at BOKU in 2011, Albert Soudré initiated an APPEAR project with his former host university and Burkinabe institutions. The positive outcome has led to funding for a second phase, this time on Advancing local capacities for livestock breeding practice and research in Burkina Faso LoCaBreed2.0. The consortium has been strengthened by the addition of new partners with diverse and complementary skills. The partners involved are competent, dynamic, enthusiastic, sociable and determined.

School-to-Work-Transition: Yekunoamlak Alemu Woldeyohani’s professional journey
Dr. Yekunoamlak Alemu, a senior staff member at Addis Ababa University is working on a research project between Austrian and Ethiopian institutions. The project focuses on employability and lifelong learning in technical and vocational professions, in line with SDG Goal 4. The partnership, which started in 2015, has strengthened cultural ties and led to further funding applications and cooperation. In terms of international experience, Dr Yekunoamlak has had the opportunity to present papers and participate in various short term trainings and seminars abroad.

Academic collaboration between Kosovo and Austria: Albana Veseli’s educational journey
Dr. Albana Veseli currently works as a lecturer and researcher at the University of Pristina in Kosovo and has a long experience in cooperation with Austrian universities. In 2007 she received the first OeAD scholarship to spend one month as a Master student at the University of Graz. After that she continued her academic mobility as a Master and PhD student. In 2008, 2009 and 2010 she was supported by the Central European Exchange Programme for University Studies (CEEPUS) for her research projects at the Institute of Analytical Chemistry, Karl-Franzens University Graz.

The OeAD is often the first point of contact for students and researchers planning a study or research stay in Austria, Europe or worldwide. In 2023 the OeAD answered about 7,500 enquiries from students, researchers and higher education institutions. Highlights of the Africa-UniNet General Assembly 2023 in Vienna
More than 140 representatives from 18 countries and 70 universities and research institutions gathered as part of the 3rd Africa-UniNet General Assembly in September 2023 in Vienna. Never before have so many representatives of African research institutions met with Austrian scientists. They showcased their collaborative projects and deepened scientific partnerships between Austria and African countries.
The highlights are now compiled in this video.

The OeAD’s budget in 2022 was 125.5 million euros. More than 350 members of staff at OeAD offices in Austria and abroad advise, support and connect people and institutions in education, science, research and culture. OeAD has six cooperation offices in priority regions of Austrian education and science cooperation. Scholarships for students from Ukraine
In 2024, the Federation of Austrian Industries (IV) is once again awarding three EUR 6,000 scholarships for high-potential students from Ukraine who are studying a STEM subject at an Austrian university or university of applied sciences or are about to start their studies. The selected scholarship holders will organize STEM workshops for talented secondary school students in the summer. Those interested can apply until 1 April. Further information and application.

Now open: 11th APPEAR Call
On 1 March 2024 the 11th and last APPEAR call of the current programme phase opened. Applications for Academic Partnerships, Advanced Academic Partnership and Extended Impact Partnership can be submitted by higher education institutions in Austria and higher education institutions and research institutions in ADC priority countries.
Deadline for applications is 31 May 2024.
Vienna Summer Universities 2024
Applications for the interdisciplinary summer programs “Alternative Economic and Monetary Systems (AEMS)” and “Green.Building.Solutions. (GBS)” are open. At AEMS (15 July to 2 August), international participants deal with the limits to growth & instabilities of our financial system, before discussing innovative reform proposals! GBS (13 July to 4 August) welcomes international students and professionals from architecture, urban planning, energy technology and similar fields to expand their knowledge on sustainable building and ecological design.

SEA-Europe Joint Funding Scheme
The Southeast Asia-Europe Joint Funding Scheme for Research and Innovation (JFS) is an instrument for promoting multilateral research and innovation projects. The projects are financed by funding agencies or ministries from Southeast Asia and Europe.
Joint calls for proposals that are of interest to the funding agencies are published at regular intervals. After a break of 1.5 years, the JFS is continuing its activities and launching three more calls for proposals, starting with a call for proposals in 2023/24 – the application deadline is 15 April, 2024.

4th edition of the Brazilian Law Exchange Program | 13 – 26 May
This intensive course offers international students a comprehensive overview of the Brazilian legal system. It covers pivotal areas such as Constitutional Law, Labor Law, Human Rights, and Environmental Law, and promises an immersive learning experience.
The course will be free of charge, with classes conducted entirely in English by faculty members of the University of Brasília and affiliate professors. The aim is to provide a welcoming environment open to the exchange of ideas, fostering a comprehensive and enriching learning experience in key areas of Brazilian law.

ACU – Equitable Research Partnerships Toolkit
The Equitable Research Partnerships Toolkit is a collection of practical resources to assist analysis and action for addressing equity in research partnerships. The toolkit looks to stimulate critical thinking and dialogue about what equity means, and what it might ‘look like’ in a research partnership, as well as suggesting practical actions that can be implemented to strengthen this. Each tool comes with specific guidance on why, when and how to use it. Every tool is designed to help establish or enhance equity within a research partnership. The toolkit was initiated by the Association of Commonwealth Universities (ACU).
