School Practice and Working Practice

As part of my master’s studies for primary education at the University of Education Styria
(PH Steiermark), I had the opportunity to complete a practical placement at Silverlea Primary
School in Cape Town, South Africa. This internship lasted for four weeks, during which I
worked four days a week, totaling 20 working hours per week. My role was primarily that of
a teaching assistant, where I actively supported various classes and worked directly with
students to enhance their English language skills.

Accommodation and the City

During my stay in Cape Town, I immersed myself in the vibrant culture of the city, which
provided me with invaluable experiences outside of my professional environment. Living in a
new country allowed me to engage with the local community and gain a deeper
understanding of South African culture, enhancing my overall stay abroad.

Evaluation of the Stay Abroad in Academic, Cultural, and Social Terms

My time in Cape Town was incredibly enriching both academically and personally. The
experience of working in a different educational system broadened my perspective on
teaching methodologies. I was able to develop my intercultural competencies by immersing
myself in the South African culture, learning to appreciate and adapt to the cultural
differences and similarities.

In terms of academic growth, my English language skills improved significantly, as I used
English daily in the classroom. This helped me refine my didactic and methodological skills in
teaching English, adapting my approaches to cater to various learning levels. Engaging with a
new education system allowed me to analyze and reflect on the differences and similarities
between the South African and Austrian school systems, which was an enlightening
experience that broadened my understanding of global education practices.

Learning and Working Experiences Gained Abroad

This internship offered me learning and working experiences that I would not have gained
otherwise. I had the opportunity to work in a culturally diverse environment, which
enhanced my ability to adapt my teaching strategies to meet the needs of students from
different backgrounds. Supporting students in different classes provided me with hands-on
experience in applying and adapting pedagogical methods in a foreign cultural context,
which significantly enriched my practical skills as a future educator.

Benefits for My Future Work as a Teacher

I strongly believe that this stay abroad will be highly beneficial for my future work as a
teacher. The experience has equipped me with a more profound understanding of how to
develop intercultural competencies in students, which is increasingly important in today’s
multicultural classrooms. The insights I gained into the South African education system and the experience of teaching English to non-native speakers will undoubtedly enhance my ability to address diverse learning needs in my future career.

Influence on My Personality

This experience has undoubtedly influenced and changed my personality in several ways.
Living and working in a different cultural environment pushed me out of my comfort zone,
helping me become more adaptable, open-minded, and reflective. I have developed a
greater appreciation for cultural diversity and a more profound understanding of my role as
a teacher in fostering inclusivity and intercultural understanding among students.

Conclusion

In conclusion, my stay in Cape Town was an invaluable experience that contributed
significantly to my professional development as a teacher. It allowed me to apply and
expand my pedagogical skills in an international context while also developing personally by
gaining a deeper appreciation for cultural diversity. I am confident that the skills and insights
I gained during this stay abroad will have a lasting impact on my teaching practice and help
me contribute positively to the education of future generations.
